The Ottoman Empire in the Tanzimat Era (Routledge, 2019) focuses on the state and local actors to understand the interaction, negotiation, and transformation between the two with a particular emphasis on the provinces. By comparing Edirne with Ankara, Yonca Köksal urges the reader to revisit the concepts of modernization, centralization, and de-centralization.
Yonca Köksal is an Associate Professor of History at Koç University. Her research focuses on social networks and state reforms in late Ottoman Empire. Hatice Yildiz will serve as the discussant. Yildiz is a Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. Her research focuses on the late Ottoman Empire and colonial India.
