New ways of approaching microhistory and family history in order to understand major events is gaining traction in historical research and writing in the Global South. Intimate family histories and what they can illuminate in major global events allow us a street-level understanding of the human experience which can transcend time and space. In this roundtable, historians working on family/intimate histories in the Balkans, West Africa, and the Middle East, will discuss their methodology and goals in adopting this approach to research and writing, and how it can help bright to light histories that have, so far, been written out of conventional historical narratives.
